The Bombay Chaat Trail

[info]bluesmoon, [info]freegeek, [info]chetanv, and [info]solzaire did a SigFood chaat trail in Bombay a couple of weeks ago. This is the trip report - [info]bluesmoon please correct/modify/add. We only have a few relevant pics since the camera was usually inside a bag whenever there was a photo-op.

So, the plan was to eat good chaat all over Bombay at as many places as possible in 3-4 hours. [info]bluesmoon's car was there for transport, so we met up at Churchgate station at 3:00 pm.

The first stop was Khau-galli, near SNDT. We were surprised to find just one chaatwalla in Khau Galli! I had this mental image that the place always swarmed with chaatwallas. Anyway, since we had a long way to go, we ordered just one sev-puri - admittedly the worst of the day at 10/-. Very dry and unappetising.

We then walked across Churchgate, got into the car near Jaihind and drove to Girgaon chowpatty - the kingdom of chaat. we reached there at about 4:15pm.
Looking around the stalls in Chowpatty.
We had a dahi puri at this first stall we saw. Quite ok.
Next up was 'Golden Bhel' here - just across from the previous stall - really bad. Boondi was what was golden about this bhel.

We had ice paani puri after this at the usual stall at the end nearest the beach. Not really ice-cold paani - he had just put the ice in.

[info]chetanv was fascinated by ice-golas from previous trips so he had a mango ice-gola.
I had some of it :)

We got back into the car after this so-so chowpatty trip and were gloomy about the future of the trail. Next stop - Five Gardens.
We had a sev-puri here again though we clicked tikkis being made.

[info]bluesmoon and [info]chetanv having studied in the area were feeling at home. They then took us to this guy making ragda samosas on the road opposite Wadala station. This thing was seriously good. we also had some famous Badshah Special chai on the opposite side of the road - [info]freegeek claimed this was the first time he did such a thing.

Next up was this guy who made great Masala puri. His gaadi is on the left footpath on the road between Dadar T.T. and Matunga circle.

We then drove to Bandra where hidden on Waroda road (that right?) behind St. Stanislaus school is Karachi Sweet Home who make awesome chaat. We had 2 plates of paani-puri here - we broke the one-in-a-place rule. It was worth it.
 [info]bluesmoon clearly was liking it.

We ended up driving around Reclamation and Bandstand, had random juice at Bandstand and that was the end of the evening at about 6:30 pm.
Total damages - 184/- most of it being used in the 2 juices in the end.

[info]bluesmoon went home after dropping us on Carter (or is it Turner) Road. We had some fun with a helium balloon and went to Shooters and Janata later for food and a coupe of drinks. Here are all the other pics taken that day.

More such things happening at SigFood and the corresponding Ryze network.

Chembur camp. Reach there by rick and ask for Jhama directly. A bit complex to write here.

the best sev puri ever

there's my regular sev puri walla opposite camps at bandra bandstand.. right next to an opening. can't remember how many people are in love with it since ive taken them there.
THE most amazing sev puri, he'll also ask if you want any changes as soon as you have the first puri, his masala puri will be ready as soon as yu're done eating anddd... he will not let you throw the kachra anywhere but in his own kachra bag. 2 thumbs up to this one!
and at 10 bucks.. an absolute steal
